![]() Ramadan traditionally is declared when someone who is thought of trustworthy within a community who sights the moon, announces the sighting and the beginning of Ramadan. For Muslims, the day begins at sunset and a new month is signalled by the sighting of a new moon. Ramadan is the 9 th month of the of the Islamic calendar which is based upon the lunar calendar. I have always been aware of Ramadan but never learnt about it in any detail. So, I caught up with Atique our Muslim Chaplain is here at the University to find out more ahead of Ramadan which begins on the 12 th of April 2021. Some interpreters also consider intense hunger and thirst as well as compulsion (someone threatening another to do something) exceptions. To determine when exactly the holy month will begin, Muslim-majority countries look to local moon sighters, according to Al Jazeera. ![]() In 2023, Ramadan will start on Wednesday, March 22, and last through Thursday, April 20. ![]() That means Ramadan starts 10 to 12 days earlier each year. Since the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar of 12 months rather than a solar calendar like the Gregorian calendar, every month starts as the new crescent moon emerges. ![]()
